Asbestos Sample Analysis

Laboratory analysis can help determine whether a specific suspect material contains asbestos. It is most useful when the question relates to one or a small number of materials rather than the condition of an entire property. A sample result applies only to the material submitted; it does not prove that a whole room, building or visually similar material elsewhere is asbestos-free.

When sample analysis may be appropriate
Analysis may be suitable where one particular board, coating, tile, insulation product or other material needs identification, where a surveyor has taken a sample during an inspection, or where planned work may disturb a specific suspect material. Photographs, colour, age and texture cannot confirm asbestos content on their own.

Professional sampling is the safer approach
Suspect materials should not be disturbed unnecessarily. Sampling can release fibres if carried out incorrectly, so the safer approach is to have sampling undertaken by a suitably trained and competent person using appropriate controls. Sample analysis is not a full survey
A laboratory result identifies the submitted sample. A management survey is more appropriate where asbestos needs to be managed during normal occupation and maintenance, while a refurbishment survey is intended for areas that will be disturbed by intrusive building work. Pricing and laboratory turnaround depend on the actual service required, sample quantity and laboratory availability, so these are confirmed for the specific enquiry rather than promised as a fixed website price or deadline.

How to interpret the result
If asbestos is identified, the next step depends on the material condition, location, likelihood of disturbance and planned work. If asbestos is not detected in one sample, that result should not be used as evidence that unrelated materials elsewhere in the building are clear. For wider property decisions, a properly scoped asbestos survey may be more appropriate.
